In our neighborhood in Alameda everyone had fruit trees. Most people had at least one Meyer Lemon (truly the best lemon ever!). There were plums and other citrus. Apple trees, grapes, raspberries and more.
Here in New England we can actually grow a large variety of fruit even though our climate is more challenging. Many fruit trees need a certain number of hours at cold temperatures. This is called chilling requirement or chill hours. Generally this measures number of hours between 32 and 45 (or less than 32) that the tree/bush requires to stay dormant and produce fruit.
A partial list of what we can grow in New England:
Berries: raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, strawberry Fruit trees: plum, peach, apple, pear, cherry, American persimmon Bushes: quince
More on all of these fabulous fruits soon but in the meantime, feel free to check this book out from the library for more ideas:
